IEA Renewable Energy Working Party meeting in Paris

On Tuesday 28, ESTIF attended IEA Renewable Energy Working Party meeting in Paris on ‘scaling-up renewables through decentralised energy solutions’.

One panel was dedicated in particular on ‘Heat and sector coupling’. The session discussed options for heat supply decarbonization that can also provide broader system integration services. It showcased options for local authorities to decarbonize heat supply while providing maximum system benefits through effective sector coupling. For instance, the city of Frankfurt presented its future heat plan, which foresees an increased use of decarbonized sources, including solar thermal, which is to cover 22% of the city heat demand by 2050.

Discussions focused mostly on the role of district heating as a provider of decarbonized solutions, and on the increasing role of electricity in the heating sector. On this point, ESTIF intervened to warn against the dangers of a massive electrification of heating, which would not automatically be a synonym of decarbonization.
