On Wednesday 6 April, ESTIF participated to a workshop held by the ALDE political group in the European Parliament, on the integration of power generation, heating, cooling, buildings, transport and ICT, in order to achieve secure, affordable and sustainable energy in Europe.
After a first panel, introduced by a keynote speech of Commission Vice-President Maroš Šef?ovi?, the second panel focused on the heating and cooling sector, and on the need to develop holistic solutions within the Energy Union. Paul Hodson (HoU, DG ENER) stressed the need to develop synergies between renewables and energy efficiency in the heating and cooling sector, while MEP Turmes (Greens) warned against the negative effects that inefficient electrificiation of the heating sector would have in different EU countries, particularly in relation to the carbon footprint in countries with a carbon-intensive power sector, such as Poland.
ESTIF Secretary General intervened in the debate, reminding the importance of putting the consumers at the centre of the system, empowering them with choice over their heating supply.
