EU Strategy on Heating and Cooling: an update
Date: 10 May 2016Category: Solar Heat News
The European Parliament is about to start debating on a Report on the Commission’s Strategy on Heating and Cooling. The appointed Rapporteur in the ITRE Committee, MEP Gierek (S&D, PL), has just published his report. Shadow-rapporteurs are now expected to take the lead in proposing amendments to the text.
Meanwhile, ESTIF participated to a stakeholders meeting organized by the Greens Group in the Parliament, to put forward plans and strategies to promote renewables and decarbonisation in the heating and cooling sector, and improve the draft report, which so far lacks a clear consideration of renewable heating and cooling. We pointed out this during the meeting, together with the need to focus on the synergies between renewables and energy efficiency, acting at a local, decentralized level, while being careful of integrated solutions that would promote a wild electrification of the heating sector.
MEP Javor, shadow-rapporteur for the Greens, welcomed our inputs and shared our concerns, and invited us to send him amendment proposals to the Report. The ITRE committee is now expected to submit amendments by the 27 of May, while the vote is foreseen for the 12 July.
