The Solar Thermal Energy for Europe 2020 workshop (co-organized and hosted by ESTIF in Brussels, Belgium) included talks on numerous policy topics and had several presentations on existing and future solar thermal heating and cooling projects. It gathered leading experts and industry representatives within and beyond Europe.

After the welcome speech of Pedro Dias (Secretary General, ESTIF) the first panel focused on the work of the ESTTP which previously led to include the strategic priorities of the solar thermal sector into the Horizon 2020 work programme of the EU. The new Solar Thermal Roadmaps have been discussed in order to continue influencing the H2020 calls in 2018 and beyond while representing the common interest of the sector.

The presentation of Eva Hoos (DG ENER EC) on the European Heat strategy offered suggestions on how to make heating and cooling contribute to demand reduction, security of supply and cost savings. Szilvia Bozsoki (DE ENER EC) showed examples of good practices of Smart Cities and Communities, including the Lighthouse initiative.

Harald Druck (ITW/TZS, University of Stuttgart) explained the concept of Solar Active Houses, while the FRESH NRG project was presented by HSR-SPF (Mercedes Hannelore Rittmann-Frank, Daniel Zenhausern) and the REEMAIN project by Uli Jakob (Dr. Jakob energy research GmbH).

During the brokerage event and networking dinner participants discussed innovative projects and ideas, while at the second day of the workshop the emphasis was given to EU policy, providing insight into the EBPD and ErP. Piero de Bonis (DG RTD EC) explained which calls for projects under H2020 are particular interest of the sector currently.

Concluding the event, a consultation chaired by Werner Weiss (AEE INTEC) took place on the update of Roadmaps and Daniel Mugnier (TECSOL) provided a summary of the workshop.
